We all know in this Florida heat, it’s important to stay hydrated. Our body is made of 60% water and drinking enough water keeps you hydrated & healthy, while allowing your body to properly absorb and dispose of nutrients. Did you know water also helps with other dental-related concerns?
Staying hydrated with water has many benefits. With every sip of water, food and sugar is washed away. This prevents bacteria from accessing leftover food, thus preventing acid from destroying tooth structure. Did you know saliva is one of the first defenses against tooth decay? Drinking more water replenishes your saliva, keeping your teeth strong by calcium, phosphate, and fluoride in the water. This will help keep you hydrated, and cavity free! (But don’t forget the toothbrush and floss). If you have very little saliva, your mouth will be drier and can put you at an increased risk for cavities.
Drinking water also prevents bad breath! By staying hydrated frequently, food will be rinsed away and won’t be able to stick to the teeth, tongue, and gums to cause bad odors. Don’t forget, sports drinks, energy drinks, sodas, and even 100% all natural juices have a lot of sugar and should not be used as a replacement for water.
From our PDO family to yours, we wish you the happiest summer full of fun, and lots of water!
